Gary Comer

Gary graduated from Reseda High in 1959 where he won the S.F. Valley Championships in the 100 yard (10.0) and in 440 yard (48.8) races. That year Gary was voted Helms Athlete of the Year. Moving over to Pierce College and running for former USC and Olympic Game star Bob Chambers, Gary took the Western States Conference Championships in both the 220 yard and 440 yard races in 1961.

That same year he took 1st place in the Southern California Community College 220 yard and 440 yard races. At the California State Finals he placed 2nd in the 220 and set a world record for Junior College in the 440 yard dash with a time of 46.6. This record is still held today for one turn in the quarter mile race. He was named the 1961 State Athlete of the Year at the JC State Companionship in Modesto, CA .

Advancing on to USC, Gary took third place in the 440 at the PAC 8 Championship Games. Summating his career he attained All-American status when running on one leg of the 440 yard relay team (40.5) at the NCAA finals in Eugene, Oregon (1964).
