Scholarships
The Pierce College Chemistry department offers several different scholarships to Pierce College students. Here is a list of scholarships available from the Pierce College Chemistry department:
- Dan W. Covey Memorial Returning Student Scholarship
- Howard Mell Greene Award In Chemistry
- Kuljian Award In Chemistry
- Margaret Briggs Chemistry Service Award
- Organic Biochemistry Award
Dan W. Covey Memorial Returning Student Scholarship
Minimum Qualifications
1. The student has returned to continue their education by enrolling at Pierce College after being out of school for some time. Students with bachelor’s degrees are not eligible for the award.
2. The student has taken at least a year of chemistry at Pierce College.
Basis of Selection
1. The student, since returning, has shown perseverance and considerable personal and intellectual growth at Pierce College.
2. The student intends to transfer to an accredited four year institution.
3. Additional considerations:
a. Personal circumstances under which the student has returned to school.
b. Any special awards or achievements that have been accomplished by the
student.
Selection Procedure
1. This award will be publicized and the process will require applicants to submit an application form which will include a resume and personal statement.
2. A review committee is selected by the Chemistry Department or is the existing department scholarship committee.
3. A review committee will review all applications and choose the recipient. The award need not be given every year.

Howard Mell Green Award In Chemistry
Minimum Qualification and Terms of Award
1. Student must have completed Chemistry 101, Chemistry 102, Chemistry 211, and completed or be currently enrolled in either 212 or 221 at Pierce College.
2. Student is graduating or has completed 60 or more transferable units and has been accepted as a transfer student at a four year institution to continue studies as a chemistry major, biochemistry major, chemical engineering major in a field requiring upper division chemistry (medicine, veterinary science, pharmacy, teaching, etc.)
Basis of Selection
1. Exceptional performance in Chemistry 101, 102, 211, 212 and/or 221.
2. Overall 3.5 GPA in transferable units and a 3.7 GPA in all chemistry courses taken at Pierce College. Performance in second year courses will be more important. Further consideration will be given to courses completed in mathematics and science.
3. Additional desirable aspects:
a. Consideration of any other special citation and meritorious accomplishments.
b. Contributions to the chemistry program: department student worker, chemistry representative to student government, special assistance to member of staff, other.
c. Personal qualities for which the college can justly be proud.
Selection Procedure
1. Selection committee is the existing Scholarship Committee or is appointed by the department chair from members of the Chemistry Department.
2. Chemistry faculty members submit names of prospective candidates for consideration.
3. A candidate need not necessarily be selected each year.
Kuljian Award In Chemistry
Minimum Qualification and Terms of Award
Student must have completed Chemistry 101 in the preceding academic year and completed Chemistry 102 in the preceding Fall semester or academic year at Pierce College.
Basis of Selection
1. Exceptional performance in Chemistry 101 and 102 at Pierce College.
2. Overall GPA at Pierce is 3.5 and an “A” grade in Chemistry 101 and 102 Pierce College.
3. Additional desirable aspects.
a. Consideration of any other special citation and meritorious accomplishments.
b. Contributions to the chemistry program: department student worker, chemistry representative to student government, special assistance to member of staff, other.
c. Personal qualities for which the college can justly be proud.

1. Selection committee is the existing Scholarship Committee or is appointed by the department chair from members of the Chemistry Department.
2. Chemistry faculty members submit names of prospective candidates for consideration.
Margaret Briggs Chemistry Service Award
Minimum Qualifications and Terms of Award
1. Student is a science major and has completed Chemistry 101.
2. Student has been a department worker for one year.
Basis of Selection
1. A strong and unselfish commitment to the chemistry department, its educational program, and its students.
2. A very responsible student with integrity, who is hardworking and takes pride in his/her job.
3. Contribution to the chemistry program such as: special assistance to faculty members, chemistry representation in student government, and exceptional support for fellow chemistry students.
Selection Procedure
1. Selection committee is the existing Scholarship Committee or is appointed by the department chair from members of the Chemistry Department.
2. Chemistry faculty members submit names of prospective candidates for consideration.
3. A recipient need not be selected each year.
4. The recipient need not be a transferring or graduating student.
Organic Biochemistry Award
Minimum Qualifications and Terms of Award
1. Student must have completed Chemistry 211 in the preceding academic year or Fall semester and completed or be currently enrolled in either Chemistry 212 or 221 at Pierce College.
Basis of Selection
1. Exceptional performance in Chemistry 211.
2. Overall 3.5 GPA in transferable units and a 3.7 GPA in all chemistry courses. Further consideration will be given to courses completed in mathematics and science.
3. Additional favorable aspects:
a. Consideration of any other special citation and meritorious accomplishments.
b. Contributions to the chemistry program: department student worker, chemistry representative to student government, special assistance to member of staff,
other.
