Speech 101-Public Speaking (3) UC: CSU. Meets CSU GE Requirements in area A-1 Oral Communication. Meets IGETC GE Requirements in area A 1C Oral Communication. Lecture 3 hours.
Public speaking is the process of learning to speak in front of a group of people in a structured, deliberate, organized manner in a variety of public speaking environments. The purpose of public speaking can range from simply transmitting information, to persuading people, to special occasion situations. Good orators should be able to influence the emotions of their listeners, not just inform them. Public speaking exists in many mediums and forms that serve different purposes for society and business, among other areas of one's personal and professional life.
Speech 102-Speech Debate and Advocacy (3) UC: CSU. Meets CSU GE Requirements in area A-1, Oral Communication. Lecture 3 hours.
Debate requires an ability to intellectually understand complex issues, research and gather information on an issue, analytically construct arguments, think clearly and critically, speak persuasively and refine the art of impromptu speaking. These skills build confidence ensuring that they possess the ability to make a powerful impact on the society in which they live. The student will participate orally as they learn how to influence their world through the art of persuasive communication.
Speech 104-Argumentation (3) UC:CSU. Meets CSU GE Requirements in area A-1 Oral Communication or area A-3 Critical Thinking. Meets IGETC GE Requirements in area A 1C Oral Communication. Lecture 3 hours.
Argumentation is often the means by which people defend their beliefs or self-interests when faced with others who do not share those beliefs or self-interests. Argumentation is one form of "artistic" conflict resolution. Argumentation embraces the art and science of civil disagreement, dialogue, discourse, discussion, debate, spirited conversation, and persuasion. Skills focus on assessing the authenticity, accuracy, and/or worth of evidence, claims, and contentions. Argumentation focuses on how to prepare, present, and defend a point of view by presenting reasonable proof for an advocated point of view. Students develop critical, lifelong argumentative communication skills.
Speech 111-Voice and Articulation (3) CSU. Lecture 3 hours.
Provides speech experiences to develop awareness of correct vowel and consonant articulation using phonetic practice. Covers vocabulary, phonetic and diacritical symbols, alphabet, and the vocal mechanism.
Speech 113-English Speech as a Second Language (3) CSU - RPT 1 (Can be taken twice for credit). Lecture 3 hours.
Stresses speaking of English, pronunciation, idiomatic expressions, phraseology, rhythmic inflections, grammar, vocabulary building, and oral composition. The course is designed for students with foreign language backgrounds.
Speech 121-Interpersonal Communication (3) UC:CSU. Meets CSU GE Requirements in area A-1 Oral Communication or area D-7 Interdisciplinary Studies. Meets IGETC GE Requirements in area A 4 Social and Behavioral Sciences. Lecture. 3 hours.
This lecture/activity/discussion course examines the theory, scope, and purpose of human communication in interpersonal environments. Students participate together in oral exercises.
Speech 122-Communication Across Cultures (3) UC:CSU. Meets CSU GE Requirements in area A-1 Oral Communication or area D-7 Interdisciplinary Studies. Meets IGETC GE Requirements in area A 4 Social and Behavioral Sciences. Lecture 3 hours.
Surveys the verbal and non-verbal ways cultures of the world communicate. It focuses on communication fundamentals, language, cultural origins, and methods of handling intercultural communication conflicts. Students will participate in researched oral discussions of selected cultural groups.
