"The fascination of sociology lies in the fact that its perspective makes us see in a new light the very world in which we have lived all our lives. (…) The experience of sociological discovery can be described as ‘culture shock’ minus geographical displacement." (Peter L. Berger, 1963)

Welcome to my website! I hope to share with you my love of sociology. Sociology has enabled me to examine the world in a systematic way and to learn to ask questions about the social reality.

I have a Ph.D. in Sociology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.  My dissertation was on “The Social and Personal Implications of the Process of Identity Revision: the Case of Separated and Divorced Catholics.”  In my dissertation, I looked at the experiences of separated and divorced Catholics who all share the potential for role conflict due to their marginalized position in the Church.  Specifically I examined two different groups: a nationally representative Internet sample of 300 separated and divorced Catholics and a mail sample of 97 people who attend support groups for divorced and separated Catholics.  I also traced the development of the North American Conference of Separated and Divorced Catholics (NACSDC), which coordinates these support groups.

My goal is to pass on not just the knowledge of sociology as a discipline with its useful critical thinking and methodological skills, but also to impart the love and excitement of learning to formulate new questions and insights about the social world.

Sociology can give you a new perspective, which will allow you to see more clearly how you can best reach your goals. You will be able to understand what specific social forces may constrain you and what social mechanisms might help you along.

As Michelangelo said, "The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it."

I hope that you aim high and dream big and that sociology will help you assess your situation accurately so that you can deal with any obstacles creatively.  Enjoy learning!
