Freshman Success - ASAP - Modularized - Math Jam
|
Freshman Success
If you place into either Elementary Algebra (Math 115) or
Intermediate Algebra (Math 125), you may take advantage of the Freshman
Success Program. This program is designed to help you get off to a good start
here at Pierce College.
The program courses will have the same group of Freshman Success
students, and the instructors and counselors in the classes will work
together to help you succeed. Freshman Success Program counselors will be
available to advise you on any additional courses you would like to take as a
freshman student. So between the students and the faculty you’ll have a
complete support group – a learning community.
If you would like to join this learning community, you must
obtain an add card. To obtain an add
card, email Crystal Kiekel at Learning Community Success at LCsuccess@piercecollege.edu
indicating which Freshman Success learning community you would like to be
enrolled in and you will be sent a confirmation email confirming your
enrollment. Once you are enrolled in this learning community, you will have a
total of 9 units. You may also enroll in an additional 3-unit course chosen
in consultation with a counselor which would give you 12 enrolled units – the
maximum allowed in the program. The three mandatory program courses are:
- The
Freshman Success Math class (either Math 115 or Math 125) for 5 units
- A
College Success Class – Personal Development (PD-40) for 3 transferable units
- A
Directed Studies Math 185 class for 1
transferable unit

The ASAP Course
“ASAP” stands for Algebra Success at Pierce and is a one semester 14 unit learning community with 4 components: Elementary Algebra (Math 115), Intermediate Algebra (Math 125) (these two are blended together), Personal Development 40 (PD-40), and Directed Study (Math 185). This program is designed to allow you to complete your algebra sequence “as soon as possible” - in one semester. If any of the following fit your situation, then this program is for you!: a) You placed into Math 125 but want a refresher also, b) You placed into Math 115 by just missing the cutoff for Math 125, c) You placed into Math 115 by scoring very high on the Algebra Readiness assessment test, or d) You did very well in your Pre-Algebra class.
If you would like to join an ASAP learning community you must sign up to get an add card. To sign up, send an email to Learning Community Success at lcsuccess@piercecollege.edu indicating which ASAP learning community you would like to be enrolled in and you will be sent a confirmation email confirming your enrollment. Once you are enrolled in this learning community, you will be getting 4 transfer credits because the Personal Development 40 (PD-40) class is 3 transferable units and the Directed Study (Math 185) is 1 transferable unit. By joining the ASAP community you’ll have a maximum of 14 units for the semester – total immersion into mathematics with a learning community of instructors, counselors, and students there to help you succeed!
There are 5 ASAP offerings for the Fall 2010 semester.
