Diversity at Pierce
As a member of the Los Angeles Community College District, the largest
community college district in California, Pierce College enjoys an excellent
reputation and is pursued by students from all backgrounds, ages, and
walks of life:
Approximately 18,000 students enroll each semester. In the Fall 2006 semester, approximately 57% were women; 33% of all students were under 20, with a majority, 33% of those, between the age group of 20-24; and, 17% were 35 and over.
The primary language spoken by 74% of students is English, followed by 10% Spanish, 5% Farsi, 2% Armenian, 2% Tagalog (Filipino), and 8% Other (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Vietnamese).
The largest ethnic group is Caucasian, White, including Europeans, Russians, and Middle Easterners, followed by Latinos which includes Mexican, Central, South Americans and other Hispanics; Asians, including Filipino, Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Korean, and Vietnamese; and, Blacks, African-American.
This site represents the broad array of programs and services that enhance student access to higher education, opportunities to pursue education and
achieve success in their goals, transfer to universities, and enter the
workforce. Additional programs and services that promote awareness and
appreciation of diversity and understanding of the many cultures that are
represented in our community are also included..
