CSU Certification
A process that
applies only to the California State University (CSU)
system in which Pierce College "certifies" that you have
completed all or part of the CSU lower division general
education requirements. You must complete a petition
form available in the Graduation Office once you have
completed your coursework.

Corequisite
A course in which a
student is required to enroll at the same time that he
or she is enrolled in another course. In the corequisite
course, the student acquires certain skills, concepts
and/or information which are essential to success in the
concurrent course.

Cross Enrollment
California residents
enrolled in a California Community College may enroll in
one undergraduate course per term in any UC or CSU
campus, provided the student has met course
prerequisites and approval is granted by both the home
and host campus. Cross enrollment does not constitute
regular admission. A $10.00 fee plus any
material/laboratory fees associated with the course may
be charged. Please see the Cross Enrollment Policies /
Procedures / Application on the Pierce Transfer Website.

Elective
A course which is
not specifically required for a major, but which may be
taken for unit credit.
| Top | |

courses taken outside of a student's major to meet the

Grade Points
The number value of
a college letter grade where:
 A=4 points
 B=3 points
 C=2 points
 D=1 point
 F/NC/W=0 points
To find your grade points for a class, multiply the
number of units by the number of points for your grade.

Grade-Point Average
(GPA)
The GPA is on a
4-point scale and is computed by dividing the total
grade points earned by the number of units attempted.
For example, if the number of grade points earned is 28
and the number of units attempted is 14, then the GPA
would be 2.0.

IGETC Certification
A process that
applies to the California State University (CSU) and
University of California (UC) systems in which Pierce
College "certifies" that you have completed all of the
CSU or UC lower division general education requirements.
You must complete a petition form in the Graduation
Office once you have finished all your IGETC applicable
coursework.

Impacted Major/High
Demand Major
When the number of
applications received is expected to be larger than the
number of spaces available for the major. Additional
criteria are then required for admissions and students
must apply during a specified time period. Be sure to
check with each college and university to see if this
applies to your major.

Independent
Institutions
Private colleges and
universities such as USC or Art Center, as opposed to
public institutions such as CSUs or UCs.

Pass-Along
Certification
If you have taken
college courses at an institution other than a
California Community College and you are following
either the CSU GE or IGETC plan, you must petition to
have these courses applied to either plan. This petition
is called Pass-Along. You should see a Pierce Counselor
for details.

Prerequisite
A condition of
enrollment, such as satisfactory completion of another
course (defined as a grade of A, B, C, or CR) that must
be met before a student can register for a course or
educational program. By meeting the prerequisite, the

Transfer Course
A course accepted
for credit toward a bachelor's degree at a four-year
institution. The Schedule of Classes and Catalog points

The official
historical record of a student's high school or college
work.

Undergraduate, Lower
Division
Fewer than 60
semester units (90 quarter units) towards completion of
general education requirements, major preparation
courses and electives.
| Top | |
Undergraduate, Upper
Division
60 or more semester
units (90 or more quarter units) complete. Course
concentration will be in your academic major. You may
have some upper division general education courses to
complete. Classification as an upper division student
does not necessarily mean you have completed all your
lower-division requirements. The classification is based
solely on number of units complete, not coursework.

Unit
The amount of
college credit given for a course based upon the number
of hours the course meets weekly. One unit represents
one hour per week of actual class time in a lecture or
discussion section. |
