Counseling Services

Our goal is to help students clarify their goals, realistically evaluate their own strengths and challenges, and learn to develop their planning skills to achieve their goals. The Counselors at Los Angeles Pierce College (LAPC) are trained in educational planning, career planning and personal counseling. We recognize that this is a process and doesn't happen in one visit.

Counselors can help you:

Visit the Career Center website to explore career and major options. Brahman Jobs is a free online job and internship board available to current students.

Request to change your major and/or home college to LAPC by completing the Major/Home College Form online or speak with a counselor in Express Counseling.

English and math assessments are no longer offered, students are placed in English and Math courses based on answers provided on the admissions application. To check results, log into the SIS Portal, click on the ‘Student Status’ tile then ‘Placement Results.’ If there are no results posted, please speak with a Counselor in Express Counseling

If you are an English as a Second Language (ESL) student, please complete the LAPC ESL Guided Self Placement and Writing Sample Form. The ESL Department will contact you through your LACCD email address with your placement.

Counseling appointments are required for students disqualified for financial aid and want to complete a Financial Aid SAP Appeal. For additional questions regarding financial aid eligibility or status, please consult with a Financial Aid Office representative.

Students who completed nursing prerequisite courses outside the Los Angeles Community College District and want to apply for the Los Angeles Pierce College Nursing Program, please complete the Request for Nursing Equivalency process.

All students who want a degree or certificate from Los Angeles Pierce College need to complete a Graduation Petition in their last semester of attendance. Counseling appointments are not required to apply for graduation. Students are encouraged to complete the petition on their own by logging into the SIS Portal, click on the 'Academic Record' tile then 'Petition to Graduate.' No degrees or certificates can be granted without completing a graduation petition.

Once a graduation petition has been submitted, all questions regarding the status of a diploma and certificate must be directed to the Graduation Office at piercegraduation@piercecollege.edu.

Students should start exploring and preparing for pre-professional occupations as early as possible. Pre-Professional Advising Sheets are available to help get you started.

Courses completed at another college and external test scores can be used to meet a prerequisite requirement for a Los Angeles Pierce College course, students may request a prerequisite clearance by following these directions.

Prerequisite clearance is not automatic when students send official transcripts/score report from an institution outside of LAPC to our Admissions & Records Office. Students must complete the prerequisite clearance process in order to receive clearance.

The Program Mapper is a suggested plan for a degree or certificate from Los Angeles Pierce College. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with a Counselor to determine if following the courses listed on the Program Mapper align with their educational goals.

Students should see a counselor every semester to stay on track. Schedule a Counseling Appointment with one of our many counseling programs on campus to connect with a counselor.

Students may speak to a counselor for a brief 10-15 minute discussion in Express Counseling. No appointment is necessary. Students may access Express Counseling in-person and online.

LAPC has a variety of services on campus to assist students during their educational journey. View our Useful Links and Resources page to see all the campus programs and resources available to help you succeed.

A Student Education Plan (SEP) outlines a suggested course of study for the individual student based on major, transfer plans, and sequence of courses. Students are encouraged to update their plan when a change is made to their educational goal.

Schedule a Counseling Appointment with one of our many counseling programs on campus to connect with a counselor.

Students may take up to 19 semester units during the fall/spring semesters. If students wish to enroll in more units, please complete the Unit Overload Petition and see a counselor in Express Counseling. The counselor will review the students’ academic record and determine if the student qualifies to take additional units. Please obtain a permission number from the instructor if the course/s to be added has already started.

Students may take up to 9 semester units during the winter/summer intersessions. If students wish to take up to 11 semester units, students do not need counselor approval and should complete the Summer or Winter Over Units Enrollment Form and submit the form directly to the Welcome Center. If students wish to take 12 units or more, students must see a counselor first. The counselor will review the students’ academic record and determine if the student qualifies to take additional units. Students need to complete the Unit Overload Petition and see a counselor in Express Counseling.
