Communication Studies
- All of our Communication Studies courses are part of a dynamic and vibrant educational experience leading to improved personal and professional communication skills, greater self-confidence, and the potential to advance in your chosen field of study and/or career.
- The Communication Studies Department offers CSU and UC Transfer general education course requirements, and general education college transfer courses to most public and private four-year colleges and universities.
- We are committed to providing students with both a theoretical understanding as well as the practical skills needed to succeed academically and professionally, and to compete in today's difficult job market.
- For anyone interested in a major in Communication Studies, we offer "core" lower division classes: Communication Studies 101, 104, 121, 122, 130, 151,and 190.
- Before taking Communication Studies courses, we recommend that students complete English 28.

Communication Studies Courses
Communication Studies 100: Introduction to Communication Studies (3) IGETC 4G and CSU GE D7. Lecture 3 hours
Students will explore the basic concepts of human communication as an academic field of study including history, assumptions, principles, processes, variables, methods and specializations. Students will examine issues relevant to the systematic inquiry and pursuit of knowledge about human communication. Students will analyze basic concepts of communication and the skills necessary to communicate in various contexts
Communication Studies 101: Public Speaking (3) UC: CSU. Meets CSU GE Requirements in area A-1 Oral Communication. Meets IGETC GE Requirements in area A 1C Oral Communication. Lecture 3 hours
This course explores theory and techniques of public speaking in a democratic society. Students will discover, develop and critique ideas in public discourse through research, reasoning, organization, composition, presentation and evaluation of various types of speeches including informative and persuasive speeches.
Communication Studies 104: Argumentation (3) UC:CSU. Meets CSU GE Requirements in area A-1 Oral Communication or area A-3 Critical Thinking. Meets IGETC GE Requirements in area A 1C Oral Communication. Lecture 3 hours.
This course explores methods of critical inquiry and advocacy. Students will analyze, present and evaluate oral and written arguments. Students will identify fallacies in reasoning and language, test evidence and evidence sources, advance a reasoned position and defend and refute arguments orally and in writing.
Communication Studies 121: Interpersonal Communication (3) UC:CSU. Meets CSU GE Requirements in area A-1 Oral Communication or area D-7 Interdisciplinary Studies. Meets IGETC GE Requirements in area A 4 Social and Behavioral Sciences. Lecture. 3 hours.
This course examines principles of verbal and nonverbal transactions that occur in relationships. Students study theory and research findings in personal and professional contexts and assess their success in interpersonal effectiveness.
Communication Studies 122: Intercultural Communication (3) UC:CSU. Meets CSU GE Requirements in area A-1 Oral Communication or area D-7 Interdisciplinary Studies. Meets IGETC GE Requirements in area D 4 Social and Behavioral Sciences. Lecture 3 hours.
Students will analyze communication in the context of intercultural interactions, compare and contrast verbal and non-verbal communication across cultures, and increase their intercultural competence.
Communication Studies 130: Introduction to Oral Interpretation of Literature. Lecture 3 hours.
Students study the theory, principles, and techniques of oral interpretation of literature. Texts include prose, poetry, drama, and other forms of performance texts drawn from a diverse range of cultural viewpoints and voices. Students focus on selection, analysis, editing, performance, and evaluation; developing an appreciation for and an understanding of oral interpretation as a communication medium.
Communication Studies 151: Small Group Communication (3) UC:CSU Lecture 3 hours.
Students analyze principles of communication in a variety of group contexts. The course provides theory, application and evaluation of group communication processes, including problem solving, conflict management, decision making, and leadership.English 28 or better is strongly recommended.
Communication Studies 190: Communication and New Media. (3) UC:CSU Lecture 3 hours.
This course introduces computer-mediated communication. Students examine how the Internet, specifically popular culture, social media, websites, blogs, podcasts, and social networks, have reshaped communication practices. The course offers an overview of relevant theories and critical issues while providing students with the opportunity to apply communication skills using new media.
Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT)
Earning an AA-T or AS-T provides a number of benefits for students planning to transfer into the California State University (CSU) system, including:
- Guaranteed admission into the CSU system (no guarantee to a specific campus)
- Allows students to use the same GE and Major Prep courses for transfer to some CSU campuses
- Guarantees a 60 unit (Los Angeles Pierce College) + 60 (CSU) unit pathway to CSU graduation
To get the full benefit, students must:
- Apply to a CSU in a major that is deemed similar to the major at Los Angels Pierce College (LAPC)
- Indicate on their CSU application that they will complete the AA-T or AS-T
- Petition for degree verification early by making an appointment with a Counselor
